ASA Announces Winners of 2011 Spring Semester Scholarship

Azerbaijan Society of America (ASA) has announced the winners of the 2011 spring semester scholarship contest. The competition was open to Azerbaijani and Azerbaijani-American full-time students pursuing a university degree at the undergraduate or graduate level at an accredited institution of higher learning in the United States.

The response to the scholarship competition from students across the United States was overwhelming. ASA received entries up until the December 31, 2010 deadline. A panel of six judges was impressed by the depth and creativity of the entries and found it difficult to choose one winner of the $1,000 US prize. In the end the selection committee announced three-way tie for first place and granted all three students each with $1,000 scholarship.

The winners are: Jeiran Hasan student at Cleveland Institute of Music, Nazrin Jahangirova at University of Minnesota and Narmin Azizli at Houston Community College. All three well written essays demonstrated not only high level of ambition and academic success but also a love for native culture and desire to share that culture with the rest of the world with very specific actions.

ASA established a scholarship fund four years ago to help Azerbaijani and Azerbaijani-American students who are studying at an accredited college or university in the United States. The funds must be used to offset direct educational expenses.

The ASA Scholarship Program is funded entirely by the Azerbaijani-American and American members of ASA.
