Azerbaijan Society of America Commemorates 107th Anniversary of the First Azerbaijan Democratic Republic

The Azerbaijan Society of America proudly commemorates the 107th anniversary of the founding of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR), proclaimed on May 28, 1918.

The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic of 1918 stands as one of the brightest and most significant chapters in the history of the Azerbaijani people, marking a crucial moment of national unification and independence. It was the first democratic and secular republic in the Muslim East, an extraordinary achievement and a testament to the vision and determination of the Azerbaijani people.

Founded by visionary leaders such as Mammad Amin Rasulzadeh, Fatali Khan Khoyski, and Nasib Yusifbeyli, the ADR laid the foundation for modern statehood in Azerbaijan.

The ADR was more than just the first independent Azerbaijani state, it was a beacon of democracy, inclusivity, and progress in a turbulent era. Born from the collective will and patriotic efforts of a generation of visionary leaders, the ADR embraced Western democratic ideals, enshrining equal rights for all its citizens regardless of ethnicity, religion, or gender. Notably, Azerbaijan became one of the first nations in the world to grant women the right to vote, a milestone achieved in 1918, two years before the United States extended the same right to its female citizens.

Key Accomplishments of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic:

Adoption of the National Flag: The tricolor flag was officially adopted, becoming a lasting emblem of national identity.

Establishment of the National Army: On June 26, 1918, the Azerbaijani National Army was formed to defend the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Liberation of Baku: With the help of allied forces, Baku was successfully liberated from Bolshevik-Dashnak occupation, securing the capital for the young republic.

Founding of Baku State University: Established in 1919, it became the first modern, European-style institution of higher education in the Muslim East and a major center of science and education.

Although the ADR lasted only 23 months before its occupation by the Soviet Red Army in 1920, its legacy endured. For 71 years, Azerbaijan remained under Soviet rule, but the spirit of independence and democracy lived on in the hearts of its people. In 1991, following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Azerbaijan once again declared its independence, restoring the values and aspirations first realized in 1918.

Today, Azerbaijan is confidently engaging with the global community, becoming an increasingly integral and respected member of the international arena. The country’s young, educated, patriotic generation is playing a vital role in strengthening its independence, which is now more robust than ever. With the successful liberation of its territories, Azerbaijan has reaffirmed its sovereignty and territorial integrity, opening a new chapter marked by peace, development, and global cooperation.

As we mark this significant anniversary, the Azerbaijan Society of America honors the memory of the founders of the ADR and reaffirms our commitment to preserving and promoting the ideals of democracy, equality, and national pride that defined this pivotal chapter in Azerbaijani history.

Long Live Strong, Independent AZERBAIJAN!
