Happy Independence Day Azerbaijan!

It is difficult to believe 32 years have passed since the declaration of Independence of Azerbaijan. Members of Azerbaijan Society of America remember when we all first heard the news in 1991, the news that we were waiting to hear all our lives. October 18, 1991, the Independent Republic of Azerbaijan was officially restored by declaration of the Azerbaijan National Assembly.

Our memories for that moment will never fade away. There we were, Azerbaijani-Americans physically sitting in our American homes, yet spiritually joined with Azerbaijan and its people as we shared an unspeakable common joy. This was a joy we will never forget as long as we live; a joy of having an Independent Azerbaijan. We have so many wonderful memories that can never be erased. Every one of us remember seeing for the very first time the flag of the nation of Azerbaijan being raised in front of the United Nations in New York. We were all there crying and hugging each other with joy. Being able to see a flag of our nation being raised meant so much more than just watching a beautiful piece of cloth high up in the sky. Our flag represented hope and determination; our pride and fortitude; our strength and perseverance; our love and aspirations.

Soon after declaring her Independence in 1991, Azerbaijan found itself in fighting battles with Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh, which resulted with Armenia's occupation of the region. Negotiation and mediation efforts went on for the next 30 years but all failed. Azerbaijan realized the only way they will get their lands back is to have a strong military and they invested and built one of the strongest military in the region. AND today they LIBERATED their lands back. Karabakh is Azerbaijan's national pride

We look forward to an era of increasing prosperity and enlightenment, we look forward to a future filled with optimism and hope for positive and growing relations between our two nations...Azerbaijan and America....As Americans with Azerbaijani Heritage we will help our homeland and be the bridge between our two nations.

We Love Azerbaijan and America!
