KHOJALY....32 years, still awaits for JUSTICE!
Khojaly is a small town in Karabakh, Azerbaijan. This little town was on the road from Shusha and Khankendi to Agdam, this small town was shelled by Armenian forces almost daily during the winter of 1991-1992 and on February 26, 1992, Armenian forces went on the offensive middle of the night, shelled and killed men, women, children and elderly when they were asleep and forced rest of the population to flee their home. As a result of this brutal attack 5,379 inhabitants of the town were forcefully expelled, 613 people, including 63 children, 106 women and 70 elderly lost their lives, Eight families were annihilated, 25 children lost both parents and 130 children lost one of their parents.
Forensic examinations and witness statements among the victims reveal that inhabitants of Khojaly were subjected to unimaginable tortures without distinction of gender or age, such as scalping, disembowelment, amputations, and gouging their eyes. Among the victims were also pregnant women whose bellies were cut open, photos taken at the time highlighted the magnitude of the massacre.
Karabakh remained under occupation for the next 30 years. On September 2020, after 44-day of the Liberation War, Karabakh region of Azerbaijan were finally liberated by Azerbaijani forces.
While the liberation of the occupied territories has brought a sense of relief to Azerbaijanis, the memory of Khojaly remains as an emotional distress for Azerbaijanis worldwide.
On April 22, 2010, the European Court of Human Rights considered the events in Khojaly as an action equivalent to war crimes, crimes against humanity.
To date, the parliaments of 18 countries as well as 24 USA States, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Organization of Turkic States have adopted number of resolutions condemning the massacre of civilians in Khojaly.
Every year, for the last 32 years, Azerbaijanis pay tribute to the memory of those lost in Khojaly. The perpetrators of Khojaly massacre war crimes are still at large. World Azerbaijanis seek the prosecution of those responsible for the Khojaly Massacre and the establishment of justice.
