Azerbaijan Society of America Commemorates the 35th Anniversary of the Restoration of Azerbaijan’s Independence
The Azerbaijan Society of America (ASA) proudly commemorates the 35th anniversary of the Restoration of Azerbaijan’s Independence, a historic milestone that fulfilled the hopes and dreams of generations of Azerbaijanis who longed to see their homeland free, sovereign, and independent.
For ASA members who grew up in the United States during a time when Azerbaijan was not an independent nation, the restoration of our homeland’s independence holds a particularly profound meaning. We grew up preserving our Azerbaijani identity, heritage, language, and culture while carrying in our hearts the hope that one day Azerbaijan would once again stand among the independent nations of the world.
That dream became reality in 1991. To witness Azerbaijan regain its independence has been one of the greatest sources of pride for our community. It marked not only the birth of a new chapter in Azerbaijan’s history, but also the realization of a dream cherished by generations of Azerbaijani-Americans.
With independence came historic moments that our community will never forget. We witnessed Azerbaijan’s flag raised at the United Nations as our homeland took its rightful place among the community of nations. We welcomed Azerbaijan’s first Ambassador to the United States and celebrated the establishment of Azerbaijan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations. These milestones transformed our hopes into reality and opened a new era of diplomatic relations, international recognition, and engagement between Azerbaijan and the United States.
For the Azerbaijan Society of America, founded in 1957, the restoration of independence was deeply personal. Long before Azerbaijan regained its sovereignty, our founders worked tirelessly to preserve our national identity and pass our heritage on to future generations. Through our community, we kept the spirit of Azerbaijan alive in America, believing that one day our homeland would be free again.
The children who grow up within the Azerbaijan Society of America learn to cherish their heritage and remain proud of their Azerbaijani roots. No matter where life takes them, they will carry that pride in their hearts and proudly raise the flag of Azerbaijan anywhere and everywhere.
Today, as we commemorate 35 years of restored independence, we honor the courage, determination, and sacrifices of those who made this historic achievement possible. We also recognize the responsibility of younger generations to preserve Azerbaijan’s rich heritage while contributing to the future of both Azerbaijan and the United States.
The Azerbaijan Society of America extends its heartfelt congratulations to the people of Azerbaijan on this historic anniversary. May Azerbaijan continue to enjoy peace, sovereignty, prosperity, and a bright future for generations to come.
Happy 35th Anniversary of the Restoration of Azerbaijan’s Independence!
