Request for Review of Azerbaijan's Omission at the American Museum of Natural History

The Honorable President Donald J. Trump

Subject: Request for Review of Azerbaijan's Omission at the American Museum of Natural History

Dear President Trump,

I am writing to you on behalf of the Azerbaijani-American community to express our concern regarding the absence of any representation or permanent exhibition of Azerbaijan at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York City.

Despite being the largest and most populous nation in the Caucasus region, Azerbaijan is noticeably excluded from the Museum’s “Halls of Asian Peoples,” where neighboring countries such as Georgia and Armenia are represented. This omission not only distorts the historical and cultural narrative of the Caucasus, but also marginalizes the rich heritage of Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijani-American community.

We recently learned of your administration’s efforts to initiate a review of the Smithsonian Institution, emphasizing a deep commitment to scholarly excellence, rigorous research, and the accurate, factual presentation of history. These principles should extend to all major institutions responsible for public education and cultural preservation, including the AMNH.

As one of the world’s leading museums, AMNH has a responsibility to represent global civilizations fairly and comprehensively. The current lack of Azerbaijani representation stands in contradiction to the ideals of academic integrity.

We know you as a man of integrity, a leader who truly loves and is dedicated to our great nation. We were proud to see you recently welcome the President of Azerbaijan and the Prime Minister of Armenia to the White House for the historic signing of a peace agreement. Your leadership continues to inspire hope for a more peaceful and prosperous world.

Under your guidance, we believe America will shine brightly once again.

We kindly ask for your support in encouraging the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) to include a display representing Azerbaijan in the “Hall of Asian Peoples.” Azerbaijan’s rich cultural heritage, history, and contributions to civilization deserve a rightful place in this important exhibit.

Thank you for your continued leadership and for standing with those who seek peace, progress, and recognition on the world stage.

With great respect,

Azerbaijan Society of America
