ASA Remembers “Black January”: A Tragic Yet Heroic Chapter in the History of Azerbaijan

The Azerbaijan Society of America (ASA) solemnly marks the 35th anniversary of the tragic events of January 20, 1990, known as “Black January,” when Soviet troops attacked Baku in an attempt to suppress the growing calls for freedom and independence from the Soviet Union.

On that fateful day, under the orders of the Soviet leadership, deployed heavily armed forces to punish those peacefully demanding their rights in the streets of Baku. The tragedy resulted in the deaths and injuries of many innocent civilians, making it one of the most brutal chapters in the struggle for Azerbaijan’s sovereignty.

The Azerbaijan Society of America commemorates this day as a reminder of the strength, courage, and resilience of the Azerbaijani people in the face of freedom. Black January remains a turning point in the history of modern Azerbaijan, an event that ultimately paved the way for the collapse of the Soviet Union and the independence of Azerbaijan.

Black January is a day to remember not only the tragedy but also the heroism displayed by those who stood for freedom, territorial integrity, and the aspirations of an independent nation. It serves as a testament to the sacrifices made by ordinary people who stood up against tyranny, laying the groundwork for Azerbaijan's future as a free and sovereign state.

The events of January 20, 1990, continue to inspire Azerbaijanis around the world, serving as a powerful symbol of the price paid for the independence and territorial integrity of the country. ASA remains committed to raising awareness of this pivotal moment in history, ensuring that the heroism of those who fought and died on that day is never forgotten.

The Azerbaijan Society of America encourages all to honor the memories of the fallen and reflect on the importance of freedom, unity, and the continued pursuit of justice for Azerbaijan.
