Azerbaijan Society of America Commemorates the 107th Anniversary of the Liberation of Baku
The Azerbaijan Society of America (ASA) proudly commemorates September 15, the 107th anniversary of the liberation of Baku, one of the most heroic and significant chapters in Azerbaijan’s modern history.
On September 15, 1918, the Azerbaijani capital of Baku was liberated from occupying Bolshevik-Dashnak forces by the Caucasian Islamic Army, (Kavkaz Islam Ordusu) a joint Azerbaijani-Ottoman military force led by Nuri Pasha. This decisive victory not only secured the sovereignty of the newly established Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR), the first secular parliamentary republic in the Muslim world but also paved the way for the establishment of Baku as the capital of the independent Azerbaijani state.
The liberation of Baku stands as a powerful symbol of unity, sacrifice, and resilience. Azerbaijani and Turkish soldiers fought side by side to protect the freedom and dignity of the Azerbaijani people during a critical time in regional and world history. Many gave their lives during this campaign, and their heroism is remembered with deep respect and gratitude.
As we mark this solemn and proud anniversary, we honor the bravery of those who fought for Azerbaijan’s freedom. The liberation of Baku is not only a military triumph, but a powerful reminder of the enduring bond between the Azerbaijani and Turkish peoples, and of the values of independence, sovereignty, and self-determination.
The Azerbaijan Society of America invites all members of the Azerbaijani-American community, friends, and supporters to reflect on the importance of this day, and to remember the sacrifices made for a free and sovereign Azerbaijan.
Let us honor the memory of the fallen heroes, and continue to promote peace, unity, and cultural understanding around the world.
