Azerbaijan Society of America Commemorates the 34th Anniversary of the Khojaly Massacre
The Azerbaijan Society of America (ASA) solemnly commemorates the 34th anniversary of the Khojaly Massacre, which occurred on the night of February 25–26, 1992, during the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict. On this tragic night, 613 Azerbaijani civilians, including 106 women, 63 children, and 70 elderly people were killed as they attempted to flee the besieged town of Khojaly.
Hundreds more were wounded, and over 1,200 civilians were taken hostage. Families were torn apart, and an entire community was devastated. The Khojaly Massacre remains one of the gravest tragedies in Azerbaijan’s modern history.
For decades, survivors have carried the trauma of that night. Many lost entire families. Children were orphaned. Communities were erased. Their voices must continue to be heard.
Today, the Azerbaijan Society of America honors the memory of the innocent victims and stands in solidarity with their families. We reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that the truth about Khojaly is remembered, acknowledged, and passed on to future generations.
The events in Khojaly represent a profound human tragedy and a painful chapter in our nation’s history. We call on the international community to continue recognizing the suffering of innocent civilians and to support efforts that promote justice, historical truth, and lasting peace in the South Caucasus.
The ASA encourages members of the Azerbaijani-American community, human rights advocates, and all people of conscience to join in remembrance activities and educational initiatives dedicated to raising awareness about the events of February 1992.
As we mark this solemn anniversary, we emphasize the importance of peace, reconciliation, and respect for international humanitarian law. Remembering Khojaly is not only about honoring the past, it is about reaffirming our collective responsibility to prevent such tragedies from ever occurring again.
