Azerbaijan Society of America Commemorates the Sixth Anniversary of the 44-Day War and Honors the Memory of Azerbaijan’s Martyrs
September 27, 2026 — The Azerbaijan Society of America (ASA) solemnly commemorates the sixth anniversary of the beginning of the 44-day war of 2020 and joins the people of Azerbaijan in honoring the memory of the brave men and women who gave their lives defending Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
On September 27, 2020, fighting erupted between Azerbaijan and Armenia, beginning a 44-day war that fundamentally changed the political and territorial realities of the region. The war ended with the November 10, 2020 trilateral statement establishing a ceasefire and providing for the return of several territories to Azerbaijan.
For Azerbaijanis around the world, September 27 is not simply a date in history. It is a day of remembrance, gratitude, and reflection. We remember the Azerbaijani soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice, the civilians who lost their lives, and the families who endured years of displacement and separation from their ancestral homes.
For decades, the Azerbaijan Society of America has worked to preserve the history, heritage, and national identity of Azerbaijan in the United States. We believe that remembering history is essential not to perpetuate hostility, but to understand the sacrifices that shaped the present and to build a more peaceful future.
The years following the war have brought a new chapter for Azerbaijan. Large-scale reconstruction and resettlement efforts have been undertaken in the formerly displaced regions, with the stated goal of restoring communities and enabling displaced Azerbaijanis to return to their homes.
Among the most meaningful symbols of this new chapter is Shusha, a city of extraordinary cultural and historical importance to Azerbaijan. Its restoration represents not only the rebuilding of physical structures, but also the revival of cultural life, music, art, education, and heritage.
As Azerbaijani-Americans, we look toward this future with hope. We believe that Azerbaijan and Armenia can build a future in which both peoples live in peace, security, and prosperity. A lasting peace must be based on respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, international law, and the dignity and security of all people in the region.
The Azerbaijan Society of America also recognizes the importance of the United States in supporting peace, stability, economic development, and regional cooperation in the South Caucasus. We remain committed to strengthening the friendship between the United States and Azerbaijan and to encouraging dialogue, understanding, and cooperation among communities.
On this solemn anniversary, ASA extends its deepest respect to the families of Azerbaijan’s martyrs and its gratitude to all those who served and sacrificed.
