Azerbaijan Society of America Commemorates the Restoration of Independence Day
The Azerbaijan Society of America proudly joins Azerbaijanis around the world in celebrating October 18, the Day of Restoration of Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
On this day in 1991, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Azerbaijan restored its independence, reclaiming its rightful place as a sovereign nation on the world stage. For Azerbaijani-Americans, October 18 is more than a historic date it is a deeply personal and proud moment that symbolizes the resilience, strength, and enduring spirit of the Azerbaijani people.
A significant milestone followed on March 2, 1992, when Azerbaijan became a full member of the United Nations. Members of the Azerbaijan Society of America were honored to witness this historic occasion as the Azerbaijani flag was raised for the first time in front of the UN Headquarters in New York, joining the flags of other independent nations.
For Azerbaijani-Americans, an independent Azerbaijan represents the fulfillment of a long-held dream the dream of a Free and Independent Azerbaijan. We honor the sacrifices of those who fought for our nation’s freedom and celebrate the remarkable progress Azerbaijan has made since regaining its independence.
Over the past 34 years, Azerbaijan has made significant strides in building a modern, democratic, and forward-looking nation, while preserving its rich cultural heritage and national identity. The Azerbaijan Society of America remains dedicated to strengthening the ties between the United States and Azerbaijan, and to promoting a greater understanding of Azerbaijan’s history, culture, and contributions to the global community.
